Maybelline | Lash Sensational vs. Lash Sensational Luscious

As soon as I saw this new formula in magazines, I knew I had to do a Maybelline Lash Sensational vs Luscious mascara comparison! A favorite mascara for many, Maybelline Lash Sensational advertises full-fan effect lashes – mimicking the way natural lashes grow in layers – not just one strip of lash. Lash Sensational’s 10-layers of bristles fan out all of your lashes, providing top-notch length and volume.

After a few years of much success, Maybelline recently released their Lash Sensational Luscious formula. Luscious promises the same full fan effect, coupled with built-in oil to nourish lashes delivered by a new reservoir-style rubber/plastic bristle brush.

How did they compare against each other? Continue reading to see photos of both formulas on my lashes and decide for yourself which is for you. I definitely have a preference, but I’ll reveal that at the end after we discuss the pros/cons of both!

Maybelline Lash Sensational and Lash Sensational Luscious go head-to-head against eachother in my review with comparison photos on brighterdarling.com

Brush

The brush is a rubber/plastic bristle style, which I prefer. It has no bend to it and is straight with short bristles on one side, which gradually lengthen and curve into a fan on the opposite side. I like to use the brush somewhere in the middle of the short and longest bristles to get the best effect and find that the length of the brush is the perfect size/shape for my eyes – not too huge.

Formula

The formula is an inky black (blackest black formula) that builds well, dries fairly quickly and holds a curl. It’s not a soft and fluffy formula and does dry sort of hard. I personally like this. Both the waterproof and washable versions can be a bit difficult to remove, so you’ll probably need a separate eye makeup remover if you have sensitive eyes, but the results – I think – are worth the extra effort.

Results

I only have black eyeliner on my lower lash line (otherwise I look dead, sorry not sorry). No other eye makeup was used but Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara on top and bottom lashes. Two applications were applied (applied one coat, let dry, applied another coat).

Brush

This brush is also a rubber/plastic bristle style with no bend, except instead of being shaped in a dual-sided fan, this is more tapered from top to bottom, with deep pockets (“reservoirs”) for the product to pool up in towards the bottom of the brush. I guess this is supposed to help it apply product to the lashes, but I honestly think the pockets are too deep to really do anything. My lashes personally don’t touch those reservoirs because they stay nestled in the bristles during application. This brush sort of hurts me a bit if I’m not careful during application… especially on those bottom/longer bristles.

Formula

This formula is also super dark – I would say it’s even slightly more black than the original. The product applies fairly heavily on the lashes, so if you’re looking for dramatic… you’ll really enjoy this formula. I picked up the waterproof version and I see no difference in removal between this one and the original formula (WP or otherwise). You’ll need an eye makeup remover or some extra TLC for any of them.

Results

Again, the only eye makeup used was black liner on the lower lash line and the Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious on top and bottom lashes. You’ll notice they look VERY similar (top/bottom comparison photo below… keep scrolling), but Luscious does have a little bit of clumping happening and definitely doesn’t layer as clean/evenly as the original. It’s bold, though! Two applications were applied (applied one coat, let dry, applied another coat).

You can more clearly see how the Luscious formula was a bit clumpier in this photo. Both provide super black lashes, volume, length, hold a curl and just look pretty good if you like dramatic lashes! I personally prefer the brush of the original Lash Sensational, so that’s my favorite, but I also like layering the two. I’ll start with the Luscious formula for the bulk of volume then finish with Original to separate.
