Another quick post for you before we head into the holiday weekend [ Labor Day omg… where did summer go?! ]. I recently acquired a deluxe sample size of the new Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation from a Sephora order and knew it would be great to put to an all-day wear test and first impression on my YouTube channel. This foundation is best for normal to oily skin, is medium to full coverage, claims to have 24 hour wear and be waterproof with a matte finish. If that sounds up your alley, continue reading for my Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation review…
Exclusive to Sephora, the Matte Velvet Skin foundation is taking the spot of the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet+ that had a fairly strong cult following for its full coverage, matte finish that oily girls everywhere LOVED (except me, because it broke me out in cystic acne *shrugs shoulders*).
You can still find Mat Velvet+ on the Makeup Forever website, but it’s gone from Sephora now. In its place, is a similar formula – although many would say nothing would compare to their love of Mat Velvet+.
The Matte Velvet Skin Foundation formula is similar in that it’s full coverage and matte. Where it differs is in the texture – Matte Velvet Skin is a bit creamy/moussier than the more liquid Mat Velvet+.
It also is said to have a “flexi-fit” technology to lay on the skin in a more flattering and natural way, while still providing the matte finish so many love.
It retails at $38 USD and is available in 40 shades at Sephora (but take advantage of the 10-20% off sale happening through Sept. 3)
Essentially, MUFE is saying the Matte Velvet Skin is the better-looking, smarter version if Mat Velvet+.
I’ve now worn the Matte Velvet Skin foundation a couple of days now and so far, I haven’t noticed any cystic breakouts (yay).
It 100% is a medium to full coverage foundation in a creamy formula with a matte finish. I cannot argue any of those claims.
Although I did not submerge my head in a pool to test the waterproof claims, I did wear the foundation over 10+ hours in 100 degree heat with a workout in between and the finish stayed nearly intact. The only areas of break down were on the tip of my nose which literally happens with every foundation I wear.

I am enjoying this foundation!
I think if you’re a very oily person, you need to check this one out because it holds up like a boss but I am loving the natural looking matte finish.
If you’re more normal/combination, I also think you’ll enjoy this formula if you like matte finishes with medium to full coverage.
It also photographs beautifully, so I can see this being great for special events!
If you have dry skin, this is a hard pass for you and Make Up For Ever knows it. Even on the bottle, it says best for normal to oily skin, so don’t worry. Try their HD formula.
It does remind me a lot of my HG Estee Lauder Double Wear, with the only big differences being the texture (Lauder is way more liquidy and easier to blend out) and the finish (Lauder is more semi matte, whereas MUFE is a flatter matte). Both claim to have 24HR wear and be water resistant. Lauder comes in 56 shades now, whereas MUFE Matte Velvet is currently available in 40. Lauder is in a glass bottle without a pump, MUFE is in a plastic squeeze tube.
You can pick this up at Sephora now (and get it for 10-20% off if you’re a BI, VIB or Rouge through Sept. 3rd!).
What do you think? Will you be trying this foundation or is it not really for you? Let me know in the comments!
